The welcome bonus on the HSBC Premier World Mastercard has now increased to 60,000 HSBC Points after you spend $4,000 in the first three months of account opening, and the first-year annual fee is waived. Based on the current maximum redemption value of 1.25c per point through HSBC Travel, 60,000 points can be worth up to $750 toward travel purchases. Compared with the long-running previous 50,000-point offer, this is a solid improvement. However, the application requirement is still somewhat unusual: you must first have a U.S.HSBC Premier Checking account before you can apply for this credit card.

This offer is pretty good, so I have also added it to our rankings!

Benefits

  • 3x at grocery stores and gas stations: This card now earns 3x HSBC Points on gas and grocery purchases, and I have not seen a very low quarterly cap so far. Based on the maximum value of 1.25c per point through HSBC Travel, that is equivalent to up to about a 3.75% travel return. For a card with only a $95 annual fee starting in the second year, this earning rate is pretty decent.
  • 2x on travel purchases: Eligible airfare, hotel, car rental, and other travel purchases earn 2x HSBC Points. At 1.25c per point, that is roughly a 2.5% return. However, there are many cards that earn 3x or 5x in travel categories these days, so I would not go out of my way to use this card just for the 2x travel earning rate.
  • Up to $85 reimbursement for Global Entry / TSA PreCheck / NEXUS: Once every 54 months, you can receive up to an $85 statement credit for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, TSA PreCheck by CLEAR, or NEXUS. Since the Global Entry application fee itself is now higher than $85, this only covers part of that fee.
  • Cell phone protection: If you use this card to pay your monthly cell phone bill, you can receive up to $600 per claim if your phone is stolen or damaged. The specific deductible and limitations are subject to the Mastercard Guide to Benefits.
  • Trip Cancellation Insurance: If you cancel a trip for a covered reason, each insured person can receive up to $1,500 in coverage.
  • Baggage insurance: If checked or carry-on baggage is lost or damaged during travel, you can receive up to $1,500 per claim, with a maximum of 2 claims per 12 months.
  • Travel Accident Insurance: Travel accident insurance for accidental death or dismemberment can be up to $1,000,000.
  • Rental car insurance: If you use this card to pay for an eligible car rental, you can receive MasterRental car rental insurance, typically for rentals of up to 31 days.
  • Purchase protection: Most new items purchased with this card are covered for up to $1,000 per claim if they are stolen or accidentally damaged within 90 days of purchase.
  • Mastercard Travel & Lifestyle Services: You can use certain Mastercard hotel, travel, and experience benefits, including some hotel upgrades, amenities, Priceless Experiences, and concert presales. This is a nice-to-have extra benefit if you can use it, but I would not assign it too much value.

Various Credits

This card has also added several small credits. Each one is not particularly valuable on its own, but if you already use these services, they can offset part of the $95 annual fee.

  • Up to $60 annual streaming credit: When you use this card each month to pay for eligible TV / radio streaming subscriptions, you can automatically receive up to a $5 statement credit, for up to $60 per year. This benefit is determined based on the merchant MCC, so not every service you think of as a streaming subscription will necessarily qualify.
  • Instacart benefit: New Instacart+ users can receive 3 months of free membership, and the second eligible order each month can receive $10 off. This partnership benefit is currently valid through January 31, 2027.
  • Lyft Take 3, Get $5: Each calendar month, after completing 3 eligible Lyft rides with this card, you can receive a $5 Lyft credit, up to once per month. This benefit currently runs through January 31, 2027.
  • $2.50 monthly public transit credit: If you spend at least $10 in a month with participating public transit merchants, you can receive a $2.50 statement credit. The amount is tiny, but you might as well take it if it is available.
  • 7% Agoda discount: When you book Agoda hotels through HSBC’s designated portal and pay with an eligible HSBC credit card, you can receive a 7% discount.

HSBC Points System Overview

  • Point value: The simplest way to use HSBC Premier Points is to book flights, hotels, and rental cars through HSBC Travel. Currently, the Premier card can use points at up to about 1.25c per point. Therefore, this 60,000-point welcome bonus can be worth up to about $750 toward travel purchases.
  • Point transfers: HSBC Rewards for Miles currently has a total of 11 airline partners and 2 hotel partners. On the airline side, Emirates Skywards is 1:1; Aer Lingus AerClub, British Airways Avios, Iberia Plus, Flying Blue, Avianca LifeMiles, EVA Air Infinity MileageLands, Qantas Frequent Flyer, Qatar Airways Privilege Club, TAP Miles&Go, and Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles are all 1.25:1, meaning 1,250 HSBC Points = 1,000 miles. On the hotel side, Wyndham Rewards is 1:1, and Accor ALL is 2.5:1, meaning 2,500 HSBC Points = 1,000 ALL Points.
  • My quick take: HSBC’s transfer partner ecosystem is of course not as strong as AMEX MR or Chase UR, but it is now much more complete than before. British Airways / Iberia / Aer Lingus cover Avios, Flying Blue gives you access to SkyTeam, Avianca / Turkish can be used for Star Alliance, and there are also Qatar and Emirates. If you are already an HSBC Premier customer, these points are still pretty interesting to play with.

My Take

This card is now best suited for two types of people. The first type is someone who already uses HSBC Premier. Since you already have the checking account anyway, you can apply for the credit card and pick up 60,000 points. The second type is someone who enjoys digging into airline miles and can also meet the Premier Checking requirements. HSBC’s current transfer partners overlap somewhat with MR and UR, but combinations like Turkish, EVA, Qatar, and Accor still have their own unique angles. If future transfer bonuses are added, the points could become even more interesting.

If you are simply looking for a card that earns 3x at grocery stores and 2x on travel, I do not think it is worth establishing an HSBC Premier relationship just for these earning rates. There are plenty of simpler options on the market with higher returns.
