More and more people are using AI these days, and ChatGPT has become a daily tool for many. Whether you are writing articles, translating, doing research, analyzing data, or coding, it can genuinely save a lot of time. But ChatGPT Plus costs $20 per month, or $240 per year. If you also subscribe to other AI tools such as Claude or Gemini, that can easily add up to several hundred dollars a year. In fact, there are quite a few ways to save on ChatGPT, including the official free tier, student discounts, credit card statement credits, and the recently launched official gift cards. In particular, business credit cards from AMEX and US Bank can even reimburse a large portion of the subscription cost. Today, I’ll summarize the current offers you can use.

ChatGPT Subscription Pricing
First, let’s look at ChatGPT’s official subscription pricing. In addition to the free version, ChatGPT currently offers Go, Plus, Pro, and the Business version for companies. The main differences among the plans are model access, usage limits, and certain advanced features. For ordinary users, there is really no need to jump straight to the most expensive version.
| Version | Price | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Occasional AI use; the free allowance is basically enough |
| Go | $8/month | Daily chats, writing, and simple image and file handling |
| Plus | $20/month | Frequent AI users who need advanced models and more features |
| Pro | $100/$200/$500 per month | Heavy users who need higher usage limits |
| Business Standard | $20/user/month billed annually or $25/user/month billed monthly | Teams that need at least 2 paid seats |
I think Go or Plus is enough for most people. If you only occasionally use ChatGPT to write things or look up information, you can absolutely start with the free version. If the free allowance is not enough, then consider the $8/month Go plan. Compared with Plus, Go costs only $96 per year, saving $144, though there are differences in advanced features and usage limits, so it should not simply be viewed as a cheaper version of Plus. Note that ChatGPT Plus currently has no official annual-payment discount, unlike many other software products where paying for a year upfront saves 20%. If you see so-called $100 or $150 annual Plus plans online, it is best to verify whether they are official channels first. Business does support annual-payment discounts, and pairing it with AMEX cards can make the deal even better, as discussed below.
4 Months Free for U.S. College Students
OpenAI has launched a new back-to-school offer: eligible U.S. college students can claim 4 months of ChatGPT Plus for free, worth $80 at the normal price. This promotion runs through October 31, 2026, and requires student status verification through SheerID. The offer is for students currently enrolled at eligible U.S. colleges and graduate schools, including both full-time and part-time students. Your ChatGPT account does not necessarily need to use a school email address for verification, but you do need to prove current enrollment. Existing Plus subscribers may also be eligible, as long as they are currently billed directly through the ChatGPT website.
This is a pretty good offer, since you get 4 months free outright, and some existing paid users can also participate. However, you usually need to add a payment method when claiming it, and after the free period ends, the subscription will automatically resume at $20/month. If you only want the free membership, remember to set a reminder and decide in advance whether to continue subscribing.
Using Credit Card Statement Credits for ChatGPT Subscriptions
ChatGPT does not run promotions as often as hotels or airlines, but several credit cards can now directly or indirectly reimburse the subscription fee. If you already have these cards, your actual cost may be much lower than the official price.
AMEX Business Gold / Platinum: $300 ChatGPT Credit per Year
AMEX has added a new benefit to the Business Gold and Business Platinum cards. Each eligible card account can receive up to $300 in ChatGPT Business Statement Credits per calendar year. You need to enroll in your AMEX account first, then purchase an eligible U.S. ChatGPT Business subscription directly through OpenAI. The amount of this benefit is much higher than US Bank’s, but it has one key restriction: it can only be used for ChatGPT Business. Regular individual ChatGPT Plus or Pro memberships do not qualify. ChatGPT Business currently requires at least 2 paid seats. The Standard plan costs $20 per user per month when billed annually, or $25 per user per month when billed monthly. If you choose two Standard seats and pay annually, the total is $480. After using the $300 AMEX credit, the effective cost is only $180, averaging $90 per person per year, or $7.50 per person per month.
| Plan | Annual Cost | AMEX Credit | Effective Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 ChatGPT Plus subscriptions | $480 | $0 | $480 |
| Business Standard for two people, billed annually | $480 | $300 | $180 |
| Business Standard for two people, billed monthly | $600 | $300 | $300 |
The figures above are pre-tax prices calculated for a full year, assuming you are eligible and receive the full $300 credit. They do not include the credit card’s own annual fee. Also, this benefit is based on the calendar year, so the amount you actually receive will also depend on when you sign up, how you are billed, and how much credit remains.
I think this benefit is especially suitable for couples, partners, or small teams. If two people already need long-term ChatGPT subscriptions, the effective $7.50 per person per month is very attractive, and the Business version also includes a separate workspace and admin features.

US Bank Triple Cash: $100 Software Subscription Credit per Year
The US Bank Triple Cash Rewards is a no-annual-fee business credit card. In addition to cash back on everyday spending, it offers up to a $100 software subscription statement credit every 12 months. The bank’s official requirement is that you make purchases directly from eligible software providers for 11 consecutive months, after which the $100 credit is automatically issued if the conditions are met. When the bank originally described this benefit, it mainly gave examples such as QuickBooks and FreshBooks, but there are now data points showing ChatGPT successfully triggering the credit. In Doctor of Credit’s summary updated in July 2026, ChatGPT, Claude, and other services are listed as eligible software services, with ChatGPT transactions categorized under MCC 5734 (Computer Software Stores). Suppose you were already planning to subscribe to ChatGPT Plus long term and use this card to pay $20 directly every month. Your annual spending would total $240. If you successfully meet the consecutive-subscription requirement and receive the $100 credit, the effective cost drops to $140, equivalent to only $11.67 per month, about 42% cheaper than the regular price.

- DoC: data points for successful $100 software credits
There are a few details to keep in mind here. First, the bank determines eligibility based on the merchant’s MCC. Not every AI software purchase will qualify for reimbursement, so it is best to pay directly through the ChatGPT website rather than trying to satisfy the requirement with an App Store purchase or gift card purchase. Second, the 11 consecutive months of spending should not be interrupted. DoC also found that the bank may judge this based on calendar months, so it is not recommended to start the first subscription at the end of a month, in case a later monthly charge date slips into the following month.

Citi Strata Elite: Use the $200 Splurge Credit to Buy Gift Cards
Citi Strata Elite offers up to $200 in Splurge Credit each calendar year, with eligible merchants including Best Buy. Since Best Buy now sells official ChatGPT gift cards, in theory you can first buy a gift card through Best Buy, then load the gift card to your ChatGPT account and use it to pay for future subscription fees. This effectively turns the $200 credit card reimbursement into ChatGPT balance, enough to cover exactly 10 months of ChatGPT Plus. For readers who already have Citi Strata Elite and have not yet used this credit this year, the potential value is quite high.

ChatGPT Gift Card Savings Strategy
OpenAI has now launched official ChatGPT gift cards. Users can buy digital gift cards from authorized US retailers and load them to their own ChatGPT accounts. After redemption, the balance can be used for eligible web subscriptions, renewals, upgrades, and certain credit purchases, so you do not need to buy a new gift card every month. For US credit card enthusiasts, this is a pretty interesting change. Previously, you basically had to pay OpenAI directly. Now that retail channels such as Best Buy are available, you can look into merchant offers, credit card reimbursements, and gift card discounts.
DoorDash
DoorDash sells ChatGPT gift cards. We have previously shared in detail how to get discounted gift cards through DoorDash and credit card dining rewards. The same method can also apply to ChatGPT gift cards.

Best Buy
Best Buy currently sells ChatGPT digital gift cards in denominations such as $25, $50, $100, and $200, generally at face value. After purchase, you receive digital redemption information and can redeem it by logging in through the official ChatGPT website.
- Best Buy $25 ChatGPT gift card
- Best Buy $50 ChatGPT gift card
- Best Buy $100 ChatGPT gift card
- Best Buy $200 ChatGPT gift card
Although there is currently no direct discount, Best Buy often appears in targeted credit card offers or bonus earning categories. If you happen to have an offer that applies to gift card transactions, you may be able to further reduce the cost of a ChatGPT subscription. For example, the Citi Strata Elite Splurge Credit discussed above is one angle worth exploring. In addition, around year-end and midyear shopping seasons, AMEX Offers often have Best Buy offers in the 10% to 20% off range, which can be useful. Best Buy is also an electronics store, so cards like Cash+ that let you choose 5% cash back can effectively make GPT 5% cheaper.

BJ's Wholesale Club Discounted Gift Cards
If you have a BJ's membership, you can also consider buying discounted gift cards directly. Currently, BJ's sells a $100 ChatGPT digital gift card for $98.99, which is a direct 1.01% discount. The discount is not large, but BJ's is a wholesale club.
Based on ChatGPT Plus costing $20 per month, one $100 gift card can cover five months of subscription, with an actual cost of $98.99, or about $19.80 per month. The savings are admittedly not much on their own, so I do not think it is worth getting a BJ's membership just for this discount. But if you are already a member and do not have a better credit card reimbursement method, it is a nice option to use. Note that the high credit card cash back advertised on BJ's pages for in-store purchases usually comes with product category restrictions. Gift cards may not qualify, so you should not directly stack that cash back into the discount calculation above.
How to Redeem ChatGPT Gift Cards
After buying an official gift card, you can visit the ChatGPT gift card redemption page, log in to the account you plan to use, enter the gift card PIN, and complete the redemption. After a successful redemption, the balance will be added to the wallet of the corresponding ChatGPT account and can be viewed in billing settings. When eligible web subscriptions renew, the system will first use the gift card balance in the account, and any remaining amount will be paid with another available payment method. However, ChatGPT gift cards can currently only be purchased and redeemed in the United States, and they require an eligible US ChatGPT account and USD billing. They cannot be used for subscriptions billed through the Apple App Store or Google Play, and once redeemed to an account, the balance cannot be transferred to another account or cashed out again. Before purchasing, it is best to confirm that your subscription is paid directly on the web, so you do not discover after buying that you cannot use it.
Use Apple Gift Cards to Subscribe to ChatGPT at a Lower Cost
Besides buying official ChatGPT gift cards directly, there is actually a more common way to save money: use Apple gift cards to add funds to your Apple Account, then subscribe to Plus through the ChatGPT app on iPhone. Since ChatGPT supports App Store in-app purchases, and your Apple Account balance can be used to pay for eligible App Store subscriptions, buying Apple gift cards at a discount in advance is effectively a discount on your ChatGPT subscription. Apple gift card deals are fairly common. For example, retailers such as Target and Best Buy often run promotions where you buy a $100 Apple gift card and get a $10 store gift card, and channels such as Costco sometimes sell them at a direct discount. If you can buy Apple gift cards at an effective 10% discount, then based on the ChatGPT Plus price of $20/month, your effective cost is only $18 per month, saving $24 per year. If you find a better 15% or 20% discount, the cost can be even lower. The process is also simple:
- Look for discounted Apple gift cards from channels such as Target, Best Buy, and Costco.
- Open the App Store on your iPhone, tap your profile photo in the upper-right corner, choose Redeem Gift Card or Code, and add the gift card balance to your Apple Account.
- Open the ChatGPT app on your iPhone, log in to the account you want to use, subscribe to ChatGPT Plus through Apple in-app purchase, and make sure your account balance is used first when confirming payment.
A few things to note: Apple gift cards must match the country or region of your Apple Account, and the actual subscription price is based on the amount shown in the App Store. Some regions may also charge tax. In addition, Apple says some subscriptions may not support payment with account balance, and even if you have enough balance, you may still be required to have a valid payment method on file. Therefore, I recommend first confirming that your account can use balance payment normally before stockpiling a large amount of gift cards. If you originally subscribed to Plus through the ChatGPT website, you should first cancel the web subscription and wait until the current subscription period ends before signing up through iOS; otherwise, you may end up being charged on both sides at the same time. Also, subscriptions paid through Apple are managed by Apple, so you can no longer use an official ChatGPT gift card balance to pay, nor can you stack it with credit card statement credits that require direct payment to OpenAI. I think this method is more flexible than buying ChatGPT gift cards directly, since there are more discount channels for Apple gift cards, and the balance you add can also be used for other eligible App Store purchases. If you already buy discounted Apple gift cards regularly, this method has basically no extra barrier. When you see a 10% or better promotion, it can make sense to buy some, but there is no need to overstock just to save a little money.

Other Ways to Save on ChatGPT
One Free Year for US Service Members and Veterans
OpenAI also offers a deal for US service members and veterans. Eligible users can claim a full year of ChatGPT Plus for free, normally worth $240. However, this promotion is not available to all veterans. It requires that you separated or retired from active duty within the past 12 months, or that you are an active-duty service member planning to separate or retire within the next 12 months. You need to verify your military status through ID.me when claiming the offer and attach it to an eligible personal ChatGPT account. Users who already subscribe to Plus directly through the web can claim it by following the official process; if you are billed through a mobile app store, you need to deal with your existing subscription first. Because some military offers may not restore the remaining free time after early cancellation, I recommend confirming the auto-renewal date first and not canceling immediately after claiming the offer.

Free Access for US K–12 Teachers Through 2028
If you are a teacher, staff member, or school administrator at a US K–12 school, you can also apply for ChatGPT for Teachers. This version is designed for educators and offers features such as a school workspace, team management, and data protection. Eligible users can use it for free through June 2028. To be clear, ChatGPT for Teachers is not simply a free regular personal Plus subscription; the usage environment and management model are different. But for teachers who already need AI for lesson planning and organizing teaching materials, it is quite useful, and it also avoids paying another $20 per month for a regular subscription.
ChatGPT Business Discount for Nonprofits
OpenAI also offers ChatGPT Business discounts for eligible nonprofit organizations. After eligibility review, approved organizations can buy Business Standard at an annual-billing price of $8 per user per month, or choose a monthly plan at $10 per user per month, which is much cheaper than the regular Business plan. This offer is mainly intended for real nonprofit organizations, requires the relevant eligibility review, and the Business workspace still requires at least two paid seats. It is not a cheap plan that ordinary users can get just by registering a new account, but for readers who already have a nonprofit organization and need multiple people to use AI, it is a long-term discount worth applying for.
Other AI Tools
Besides ChatGPT, there are now quite a few commonly used AI tools, including Claude, Google Gemini, Perplexity, and developer-focused tools such as Cursor and GitHub Copilot. These products also have their own free tiers or discounts, but most of them do not have as many credit-card-related angles as ChatGPT. Here is a quick overview.
Claude
Claude is an AI assistant from Anthropic and has many users for long-form writing, coding, and complex task handling. Claude Pro costs $20/month, or $200 if paid annually, saving $40 per year compared with monthly billing. For people who are sure they will use Claude long term, annual billing is a straightforward discount. In addition, the US Bank Triple Cash software subscription credit mentioned earlier has already had successful data points with Claude, but a one-time annual charge does not directly satisfy the requirement for consecutive monthly purchases.
Google Gemini
Google Gemini actually has even more discounts than ChatGPT, especially for students and readers who already use other Google services. Google AI Pro normally costs $19.99/month, or $199.99 annually. Eligible US college students can also claim one free year of Google AI Pro, with the promotion running through December 31, 2026. In addition, Google AI Pro supports sharing some subscription benefits with eligible family members, so if everyone in the family needs to use Gemini, the average cost can be reduced further.
Perplexity
Perplexity is more of an AI search tool. It can answer questions by incorporating information from the web and include the relevant sources. It is quite useful for people who often need to look up information or do research. It has a free version, and eligible students and educators can verify through SheerID to purchase Education Pro for $10 per month. For regular users, I think it makes sense to start with the free version and only consider paying if you need more advanced search quota.
Cursor
Cursor is a relatively popular AI coding tool, suitable for users who often write code or do Vibe Coding. The regular price for the individual Pro plan is $20/month, and paying annually can save about 20%. If you only occasionally ask AI to modify some code, you can start with the free version. If you already use Cursor as your main development tool, then considering the annual discount is more reasonable.
GitHub Copilot
GitHub Copilot is also a fairly common AI coding tool. Its individual Pro plan is currently $10/month. It also offers a free version with usage limits, and eligible students who are verified through GitHub Education can use Copilot Student for free. If you mainly want AI assistance with programming rather than lots of chatting or complex research, trying the free Copilot first is also a good option. There is no need to buy memberships for every coding tool at the same time.
